Traditional economic views often take the production and reproduction of labor force as given, ignoring the continuous, time- and energy-consuming work required to maintain it. The activities that facilitate the transformation of goods and services into effective well-being, thereby enabling individuals to engage in the economic system, are collectively referred to as carework. Therefore, we cannot fully understand the economy without acknowledging the crucial role of carework in sustaining it.
Unfortunately, carework is unfairly distributed, with women, racialized and queer people bearing a disproportionate share of both (under)paid and unpaid care provision. Additionally, access to care work varies based on socioeconomic status and other intersectional identities. Therefore, it is urgent that we rethink carework to build fairer and more equitable economies.
The 4th Global Carework Summit 2025 to be held June 5-7 June at Duke University, North Carolina celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Global Carework Network and invites us to collectively rethink care work in order to imagine more sustainable futures. It will explore how conversations about care have developed during the last 25 years and what factors have informed notable inflection points — not only discrete events such as the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic but also more sustained dynamics such as environmental crises, pervasive neoliberal policies, the ongoing importance of migrant careworkers, the changing role of technologies and infrastructures,

It will explore how conversations about care have developed during the last 25 years and what factors have informed notable inflection points — not only discrete events such as the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic but also more sustained dynamics such as environmental crises, pervasive neoliberal policies, the ongoing importance of migrant careworkers, the changing role of technologies and infrastructures, and renewed global reckonings with the effects of sexism, racism and colonialism.
The YSI Pre-Conference Workshop will take place on 5 June, the morning starting 4th Global Carework Summit: ‘Carework Stories and Futures’ at Duke University. This initiative continues the dialogue already started in Costa Rica with Carework Network, fostering support for the Summit. The aim is to bring together young researchers to discuss contributions to care, work and economic studies within a multidisciplinary framework in a workshop called Care Work and Economic Justice: Perspectives and Policies.
We invite all young researchers who might be interested in presenting a contribution to apply by submitting an abstract (300 words max.) of a paper or a public dialogue proposal, either in English or Spanish, that contributes to questions like: How have conversations about care evolved over the last 25 years? What factors have influenced significant shifts in the discourse of care, such as the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, and others? How do environmental crises affect the dynamics of care work and its recognition? What alternative theorisations and politics of care have emerged in these 25 years, for example in relation to sexual and gendered dissidences, racialised identities and neurodivergences? What role do pervasive neoliberal policies play in shaping care work and its value in the economy? How has the continued importance of migrant care workers influenced care policies and practices? How is care work and the politics of care work affected by the global re-emergence of racist, colonialist and sexist ideals? How have technological and infrastructural changes affected care work?
We seek to create intergenerational, interdisciplinary and interregional networks to discuss care, work and the economy, to identify new areas of research and to rethink policies from a care perspective. With this in mind, we are looking for contributions from different disciplines that address the above questions. In addition, each participant will be asked to comment on the work of another participant in order to encourage a broad and enriching dialogue between participants.
As this is an in-person only event and, to encourage young scholars and early careers participation, some selected participants can be eligible for financial support for travel and accommodation during the conference. Funding criteria will prioritize place of residence, quality of work, and diversity of fields, ideas, and identities. Please indicate the need for funding in the application. Note that acceptance of a proposal does not imply a funding commitment and that the stipends could only be used for travel expenses but do not cover the registration fees for the 4th Global Carework Summit 2024, visas and food that each participant should afford on their own.

YSI Pre-Conference: workshop trabajo de cuidados y la justicia económica: perspectivas y políticas.
Las visiones económicas tradicionales a menudo consideran la producción y reproducción del trabajo como algo dado, ignorando el trabajo continuo, que consume tiempo y energía, necesario para mantenerla. Las actividades que facilitan la transformación de bienes y servicios en bienestar efectivo, permitiendo así que las personas participen en el sistema económico, se denominan colectivamente trabajo de cuidado. Por lo tanto, no podemos entender completamente la economía sin reconocer el papel crucial del trabajo de cuidado en su sostenimiento.
Desafortunadamente, el trabajo de cuidado está distribuido de manera injusta en las mujeres, personas racializadas, personas trans y queer soportando una parte desproporcionada del cuidado (mal)pagado tanto como del cuidado no remunerado. Además, el acceso al cuidado y a la protección social varía según el estatus socioeconómico y las experiencias y modos de vida atravesadas por la interseccionalmente. Por lo tanto, continúa siendo imprescindible que repensemos el trabajo de cuidado para construir economías un poco más justas y equitativas.
La 4ª Cumbre Global de Trabajo de Cuidado 2025, que se celebrará del 5 al 7 de junio en la Universidad de Duke, Carolina del Norte, celebra el 25º aniversario de la Red Global de Trabajo de Cuidado y nos invita a repensar colectivamente el trabajo de cuidado para imaginar futuros más sostenibles. Explorará cómo se han desarrollado las conversaciones sobre el cuidado durante los últimos 25 años y qué factores han informado puntos de inflexión notables, no solo eventos como la crisis financiera de 2008 y la pandemia de Covid-19 de 2020, sino también dinámicas más sostenidas como las crisis ambientales, las políticas neoliberales, la importancia continua del trabajo migrante de cuidado, el papel cambiante de las tecnologías e infraestructuras, y las renovadas reflexiones globales sobre los efectos del sexismo, el racismo y el colonialismo.
El Workshop Pre-Conferencia de YSI tendrá lugar en la mañana del 5 de junio, al comenzar la 4ª Cumbre Global de Trabajo de Cuidado: “Historias y Futuros del Cuidado” en la Universidad de Duke. Esta iniciativa continúa el diálogo ya iniciado en Costa Rica con Carework Network, fomentando el apoyo el Encuentro. El objetivo es reunir a jóvenes investigadores para discutir la contribución a los estudios del cuidado, el trabajo y de la economía, dentro de un marco multidisciplinario en un workshop llamado Trabajo de Cuidado y Justicia Económica: Perspectivas y Políticas.
Invitamos a todos los jóvenes investigadores que puedan estar interesados en presentar una contribución a postularse enviando un resumen (máximo 300 palabras) de un artículo o una propuesta de diálogo público, en inglés o en español, que contribuya a preguntas como: ¿Cómo han evolucionado las conversaciones sobre el cuidado en los últimos 25 años? ¿Qué factores han influido en cambios significativos en el discurso sobre el cuidado, como la crisis financiera de 2008, la pandemia de Covid-19 de 2020 y otros? ¿Cómo afectan las crisis ambientales a la dinámica del trabajo de cuidado y su reconocimiento? ¿Qué teorizaciones y políticas alternativas en torno a los cuidados surgieron en estos 25 años, como por ejemplo, en relación con disidencias sexuales y genéricas, las identidades racializadas y las neurodivergencias? ¿Qué papel juegan las políticas neoliberales omnipresentes en la configuración del trabajo de cuidado y su valor en la economía? ¿Cómo ha influido la importancia continua de los trabajadores migrantes de cuidado en las políticas y prácticas de cuidado? ¿Cómo se ve afectado el trabajo de cuidado y la política de trabajo de cuidado por la reaparición de ideales racistas, colonialistas y sexistas a nivel mundial? ¿Cuáles son las implicaciones de los cambios tecnológicos y de infraestructura en el trabajo de cuidado?
Buscamos generar redes intergeneracionales, interdisciplinarias e interregionales para debatir sobre cuidados, trabajos y economía, encontrar nuevos campos de estudio y repensar las políticas desde una perspectiva de cuidado. Con esto en mente, buscamos contribuciones de diferentes disciplinas que aborden las preguntas anteriores. Además, cada participante también será asignado para comentar sobre el trabajo de otra persona, con el fin de promover diálogos integrales y enriquecedores entre participantes.
Dado que este es un evento solo presencial y, para fomentar la participación de estudiantes de grado, maestría, doctorado o personas investigando en sus primeros años, algunos/as participantes pueden ser elegidos/as para ser apoyados económicamente en relación con el transporte y el alojamiento durante la conferencia. Los criterios de financiación priorizarán la necesidad, el lugar de residencia, la solidez de la propuesta y la diversidad de campos, ideas e diversidad de identidades. Por favor, indique la necesidad de financiación con criterio en la solicitud en relación con transporte y alojamiento. Tenga en cuenta que la aceptación de una propuesta no implica un compromiso de financiación y que los estipendios solo podrían usarse para gastos de viaje, pero no cubren las tarifas de inscripción para la 4ª Cumbre Global de Trabajo de Cuidado 2024, visas y alimentos que cada participante deberá costear por su cuenta.
