This panel is hosted by Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) in collaboration with Ekonsepto, a non-profit organization based in the Philippines that works on expanding economics literacy. Ekonsepto serves as the Rethinking Economics chapter in the country and previously hosted the first-ever YSI panel at the 2024 Philippine Economics Society conference.
About Young Scholars Initiative (YSI)
YSI is an initiative of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), dedicated to expanding economic discourse beyond conventional models. Through its East Asia Working Group, YSI explores themes such as:
- Regional economic development in East and Southeast Asia
- Sustainable fiscal and monetary policies
- Industrial and financial markets
- Energy and environmental policy
This project strengthens the East Asia Working Group by directly contributing to its research theme “ecology and sustainable development”. With Asia Pacific responsible for 3.2% of global CO2 emissions from combustible fuels in 2022, and emissions from fuel combustion in the region increasing by 30% between 2000 and 2022 (IEA, 2024), it is crucial to examine alternative economic models. This is particularly important as leading economies like Singapore often prioritize growth over environmental concerns, while other nations in the region bear the brunt of climate change impacts despite contributing less to the problem. This is a regional focus on the issue of unequal ecological exchange.
By bringing together local and international scholars, we allow for comparative analysis of regional development strategies and their environmental impacts, enriching the Working Group’s understanding of diverse approaches to sustainable growth. The project also promotes a critical re-evaluation of the history of economic thought and regional development, prompting a deeper exploration of how different economic philosophies have shaped—and can reshape—the relationship between economic activity and environmental sustainability in East Asia.
