Noordzee Economic Dialogues (NED) 2025: (De)Globalization and Sustainable Development – International Economic Perspectives in a Multipolar World
The Noordzee Economic Dialogues (NED) 2025 edition aims to serve as a critical platform for analyzing the intersection of (de)globalization and sustainable development through the lens of international economics. In 2025, the global economic landscape is marked by profound realignments: the emergence of competing economic blocs, escalating trade tensions following the U.S. political transition, China’s evolving economic strategy, and Europe’s pursuit of strategic autonomy. These geopolitical shifts are fundamentally reshaping international economic relations at the same time that urgent sustainability imperatives demand coordinated global action.
This conference brings together international economics expertise to examine how changing patterns of global economic integration affect sustainable development pathways. The event is particularly timely as countries navigate competing pressures from economic nationalism and planetary boundaries. With resource competition intensifying and critical mineral supply chains becoming increasingly politicized, traditional frameworks of international economic cooperation are being challenged. Meanwhile, the expansion of regional trade agreements with sustainability provisions signals new approaches to economic integration.
The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) provides an ideal setting for these discussions, bringing together economists from both established and emerging economies to analyze differential impacts across the global economic system. ISS’s expertise in development economics and political economy will contribute significantly to understanding how geopolitical competition intersects with sustainable development imperatives.
