Political Economy perspectives are crucial when trying to understand developmental processes (or their absence). Yet, Political Economy research has become increasingly marginalised in development studies over the last few decades. We want to bring together young Political Economy scholars within development studies who are often scattered across various institutions. Our aim is to form a community through a monthly reading and discussion group, discussing published PE articles on development as well as our own PE related work, and setting the stage for potential further collaboration. Some of us have already been meeting for some time, culminating in an in-person workshop and a special issue. We are excited to welcome new members and invite engagement and collaboration beyond our core group.
To kick us off we will meet on September 7th 2026 (9.30 am UK time) to discuss why PE perspectives have become less prominent in development studies over time (and why it is important to bring them back) based on two short articles by Pritish Behuria who has been an active PE defender in discipline-wide “Future of Development Studies” debates.
We look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts!
