The summer school is held fully online
The 5th UNCTAD YSI Summer School provides an opportunity to explore the Challenges and Opportunities of a New International Economic Order. The school will bring together UNCTAD experts, academics, diplomats, and young scholars from across the globe for lively and stimulating intellectual debates.
The world economy is in flux. The period following the global financial crisis failed to address the stresses and fractures that led up to it. The looming climate catastrophe, COVID shock and conflict in Ukraine have added further layers of complexity and heightened the uncertainty surrounding existing structures of global economic governance. The future direction of the world economy is subject to multiple forces but ultimately it emerges from the intersection of economic interests and policy choices, at the international as well as the national level.
Needless to say, policy actions taken by systematically more powerful advanced economies, beginning with the United States, continue to weigh most heavily on the direction of trade, financial and technology flows. But if a more balanced and stable international economic order is to emerge, developing countries will need to decide, both individually and collectively, what institutional reforms and policy choices they will need to take to ensure inclusive and sustainable development pathways. What is more crucial, all countries need to be part of the effort to construct the kind of international support that will be needed to support those efforts.

Certificate of Attendance
To receive certification that you have attended the school, you must:
- Use the same email address to register for all events
- Attend at least 4 full days of programming in person online, including each entire speaker session and the YSI follow up discussion in full Note: viewing recordings online will not count towards attendance
- Attend the Opening & Keynote Addresses in their entirety
Certifications of attendance will be emailed to the email address you used to register within the two weeks following the summer school.
Mentorship Program
The mentorship program allows young scholars a 30 minute 1-on-1 online meeting with a senior scholar to discuss their work and research. This is an amazing opportunity for young scholars to receive guidance and feedback.
To be able to apply to the mentorship program, a certificate of attendance of this year’ summer school is required. Please note that while it is a requirement, it does not guarantee a place within the mentorship program. The application to the mentorship program will only be sent to those who have received their certificate of attendance. Applications for mentorship will be provided about one month after the summer school. At that time, a list of available mentors and the amount of young scholars they are able to speak to will be provided.
