Description

Since November we read many papers related to the Ontology of Economics, from Evolutionary Realism to recent debates in Econometrics. The first part of the reading group during the last six months expanded my understanding of the economy. Now we move on to the Epistemology of Economics to focus on the question of how we acquire the knowledge about the economy. Upcoming sessions will enable us to enlarge our toolbox of economic analysis and criticize our own methods of acquiring knowledge about the economy.

Next week we will discuss a paper by Jakob Kapeller (2013). The author analyses the epistemological shortcomings of neoclassical theory using 'Model-Platonism'. We expect it to be a good start of Epistemology of Economics in light of our previous readings.

Paper: Kapeller, J. (2013) ‘Model-Platonism’ in economics: on a classical epistemological critique, Journal of Institutional Economics, 9: 2, 199–221
Link to the paper: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1G-RM0sO9xCW1Q13HK0WY_ea7TkIo9pQo
Date: 15. April 2020, 21:00 (CET, Berlin)

Besides, it is mandatory to read the paper, since the discussion will be based on the paper assigned to each reading session.

Structure: First 30 minutes we will discuss key points from the paper. Then, we will move on to elaborate, criticize or analyze the ideas stated and try to connect the reading to the overall picture of the reading group.

Please do join us if you are interested.

Looking forward to having a fruitful debate related to the Epistemology of Economics!
