This two-day workshop aims to bring together NGOs, early career academics, and PhD and Masters students to investigate the interconnections between finance and social justice in a way that transcends conventional conference and workshop formats.

The focal points of the workshop are two case studies formulated by Oxfam and Share Action. These case studies outline two key challenges in the design of a financial system that works for the many and not the few: reshaping the market for corporate control (Oxfam) and including social and human rights considerations in the drive for sustainable finance initiatives (Share Action).

Participants will be asked to present analyses of (and possible solutions to) the problems identified in the case studies from their diverse methodological and disciplinary approaches.

Description
Often, when academics present work at conferences and seminars, a selection of related papers is made and each individual presenter gives an overview of their work, subsequently receiving questions and feedback. While the papers may address a particular theme and shed light upon it, little attempt is made in theses forums to consider how each individual’s methodological and disciplinary approach can contribute to the understanding of a particular problem, never mind to consider its solution. The Finance and Social Justice workshop will invert traditional conference and seminar formats by inviting teams of NGOs, academics, and students to contribute research, critiques, and new ideas from their own disciplinary perspectives to address the same problem. In this innovative format, an NGO practitioner will first outline the particular challenge that their organisation is seeking to address; then three to four respondents will present analyses of (and possible solutions to) the problem from their diverse methodological and disciplinary approaches.

Funding
We will provide selected participants with a contribution towards travel costs, an inclusive night of accommodation in Glasgow, and a workshop dinner.

Selection
The selection will be based on the merits of the application. We especially encourage applications by advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs whose studies, careers, and research interests are in the social sciences.
