Financing Economic Development and Growth Constraints: 70 Years of Kalecki’s Influence on Structuralism

Context: In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Michal Kalecki’s seminal article “The Problem of Financing Economic Development,” published in El Trimestre Económico following his lecture at the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA) in Mexico City in August 1953, we invite young scholars to participate in a special event. This event aims to revisit Kalecki’s transformative insights on demand-driven growth and structuralist approaches to development economics, which have had a lasting influence on the economic discourse in developing countries.

We welcome submissions from young researchers that analyze not only the legacy of Kalecki but also broader challenges of development from a demand-led perspective. Works that explore demand-driven frameworks and their application to contemporary economic issues—whether through Kalecki’s lens or through other innovative approaches—are encouraged. The event seeks to inspire new research and foster discussions that connect Kalecki’s ideas with current global challenges such as inequality, inflation, and sustainable energy transitions.

Event structure: The event will be held over three days and will focus on the work of Michal Kalecki and its ongoing influence on the economies of developing countries. Keynote speaker sessions and young scholars workshops will be held over the three days. Confirmed speakers for the event include Gabriel Porcile and Robert Blecker. The event will also explore how Kalecki’s ideas have shaped
