Description

YSI Panel @ I Congresso do Desajuste – “Prospects for economic growth and redistribution in Brazil and Latin America: can heterodox economics lead the recovery?”

In the 2000s, Brazil and other Latin American countries experienced a period of economic growth and income redistribution resulting from favorable external conditions and policies to foster aggregate demand. In less than one decade, however, the situation was considerably reverted: poverty and inequality in the region have been increasing, economic activity has been stagnant, and old issues such as inflation and famine are resurging in a post-pandemic context. Is there any chance of restoring the economic conditions that led Brazil and Latin America to their “golden age”? How do Keynesian and heterodox economics analyze the prospects around this recovery? Can they show the path to another “golden age”?

Professors and young scholars will discuss these and other questions in the panel organized by the Keynesian Economics Working Group that will take place in the 1st edition of the Congresso do Desajuste, an autonomous initiative of a network formed by young economists from different regions and institutions in Brazil. The panel will be divided into three main discussions: i) Economic impasse in Brazil: how to restore an inclusive growth trajectory in the short term? ii) Rethinking economic growth in developing economies: how heterodox economics can adopt new policy agendas (i.e., green transition) to Brazil and Latin America? iii) Restoring the boom in Latin America: do current economic and political conditions provide
