DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the Second Edition of the Summer School of Applied Economics for Latin America (EVEAAL) 2025\, an academic initiative designed for graduate students and researchers interested in exploring and applying innovative methodologies in applied economics. \nThis edition of EVEAAL will focus on Agent-Based Model (ABM) and Stock-Flow Consistent (SFC) macroeconomic modeling\, two critical approaches for analyzing and addressing the challenges posed by the green and ecological transition. These methodologies provide robust analytical tools to tackle the complex economic and environmental issues facing Latin America. \nThe course will take place in person from June 2 to June 6\, 2025\, at the Graduate Studies Division of the Faculty of Economics\, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)\, in Mexico City. \nThe program will consist of two parallel modules: one dedicated to agent-based (AB) methodology and the other to stock-flow consistent (SFC) methodology. Both modules will be interconnected through dialogue sessions\, fostering the integration of these perspectives. This event will be conducted primarily in English; however\, some sessions will be held in Spanish. \nTo ensure a high-quality learning experience\, participation will be limited\, allowing for personalized attention to participants’ questions and enriching the learning process. Upon completing the course\, participants who attend at least 80% of the sessions will receive a certificate of participation. \nThere will be partial transportation funding for both national and international participants. DESCRIPTION:Following the success of the first YSI workshop at the Sustainability Research & Innovation (SRI) Africa Satellite Event in Durban\, South Africa\, YSI is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for the second edition. This workshop will take place from June 4–6\, 2025\, in Nairobi\, Kenya\, under the theme: “Integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems into Environmental Decision-Making.” \nWorkshop Overview \nIndigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are deeply rooted in centuries of observation\, adaptation\, and interaction with local ecosystems. These knowledge traditions embody sustainable practices and a holistic understanding of nature\, offering valuable insights that can complement scientific methodologies in addressing pressing environmental challenges\, including climate change\, biodiversity loss\, and resource degradation. \nThis workshop aims to explore effective strategies for integrating IKS into environmental decision-making processes to foster inclusive\, culturally sensitive\, and impactful solutions. By bridging indigenous wisdom with scientific approaches\, the session seeks to create actionable pathways that reflect both ecological realities and community priorities. Case studies—such as traditional forest conservation in Gabon or water management systems in Sub-Saharan Africa—illustrate how IKS can enhance resilience\, promote sustainability\, and empower marginalized communities. \nWorkshop Objectives \nThe workshop will focus on developing practical frameworks for collaboration between young scholars\, indigenous communities\, researchers\, policymakers\, and practitioners. Key topics will include:\n– Recognition of Indigenous Rights: Ensuring equitable participation in environmental governance.\n– Ethical Use of Traditional Knowledge: Addressing concerns related to knowledge appropriation and fair benefit-sharing.\n– Innovative Policy and Governance Models: Institutionalizing IKS within national and local decision-making frameworks.\n– Transdisciplinary Approaches: Merging indigenous knowledge with scientific research to create holistic sustainability strategies. \nCall for Contributions \nWe invite transdisciplinary case studies that offer actionable insights into integrating IKS into environmental governance. Submissions should highlight practical applications\, propose long-term partnerships\, and amplify the voices of indigenous communities in shaping a sustainable future. \nEligibility: \n– Submissions must focus on an African case study.\n– Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words.\n– The submission deadline is April 30\, 2025.\n– Selected authors will be notified two weeks after the deadline. \nExpected Outcomes \n1. Practical Solutions: Participants will collaboratively design strategies to incorporate IKS into local and national sustainability policies\, with applications in climate adaptation\, biodiversity conservation\, and resource management.\n2. Partnerships: The workshop will facilitate connections between young scholars and the Future Earth/SRI community—including indigenous leaders\, researchers\, and policymakers—to foster long-term collaborations based on mutual respect and shared goals.\n3. SUMMARY:YSI Pre-Conference @ 4th Global Carework Summit “Histories and Futures of care” in Duke University (North Carolina\, USA)
DESCRIPTION:YSI Pre-Conference Workshop Care Work and Economic Justice: Perspectives and Policies \nTraditional economic views often take the production and reproduction of labor force as given\, ignoring the continuous\, time- and energy-consuming work required to maintain it. The activities that facilitate the transformation of goods and services into effective well-being\, thereby enabling individuals to engage in the economic system\, are collectively referred to as carework. Therefore\, we cannot fully understand the economy without acknowledging the crucial role of carework in sustaining it. \nUnfortunately\, carework is unfairly distributed\, with women\, racialized and queer people bearing a disproportionate share of both (under)paid and unpaid care provision. Additionally\, access to care work varies based on socioeconomic status and other intersectional identities. Therefore\, it is urgent that we rethink carework to build fairer and more equitable economies. \nThe 4th Global Carework Summit 2025 to be held June 5-7 June at Duke University\, North Carolina celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Global Carework Network and invites us to collectively rethink care work in order to imagine more sustainable futures. It will explore how conversations about care have developed during the last 25 years and what factors have informed notable inflection points — not only discrete events such as the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic but also more sustained dynamics such as environmental crises\, pervasive neoliberal policies\, the ongoing importance of migrant careworkers\, the changing role of technologies and infrastructures\, and renewed global reckonings with the effects of sexism\, racism and colonialism. \nThe YSI Pre-Conference Workshop will take place on 5 June\, the morning starting 4th Global Carework Summit: ‘Carework Stories and Futures’ at Duke University. This initiative continues the dialogue already started in Costa Rica with Carework Network\, fostering support for the Summit. The aim is to bring together young researchers to discuss contributions to care\, work and economic studies within a multidisciplinary framework in a workshop called Care Work and Economic Justice: Perspectives and Policies. \nWe invite all young researchers who might be interested in presenting a contribution to apply by submitting an abstract (300 words max.) of a paper or a public dialogue proposal\, either in English or Spanish\, that contributes to questions like: How have conversations about care evolved over the last 25 years? What factors have influenced significant shifts in the discourse of care\, such as the 2008 financial crisis\, the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020\, and others? How do environmental crises affect the dynamics of care work and its recognition? What alternative theorisations and politics of care have emerged in these 25 years\, for example in relation to sexual and gendered dissidences\, racialised identities and neurodivergences? What role do pervasive neoliberal policies play in shaping care work and its value in the economy? How has the continued importance of migrant care workers influenced care policies and practices? How is care work and the politics of care work affected by the global re-emergence of racist\, colonialist and sexist ideals? How have technological and infrastructural changes affected care work? \nWe seek to create intergenerational\, interdisciplinary and interregional networks to discuss care\, work and the economy\, to identify new areas of research and to rethink policies from a care perspective. With this in mind\, we are looking for contributions from different disciplines that address the above questions. In addition\, each participant will be asked to comment on the work of another participant in order to encourage a broad and enriching dialogue between participants. \nAs this is an in-person only event and\, to encourage young scholars and early careers participation\, some selected participants can be eligible for financial support for travel and accommodation during the conference. Funding criteria will prioritize place of residence\, quality of work\, and diversity of fields\, ideas\, and identities. Please indicate the need for funding in the application.
