SUMMARY:Economic Fitness and Economic Complexity (EFC) Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The Economic Fitness and Economic Complexity (EFC) Summer School is back\, after the success of the first two editions. The third edition will take place at the Enrico Fermi Research Center (CREF\, Rome) from 9 to 13 June 2025. The EFC Summer School is an extensive introduction to the economic complexity framework\, with theoretical and practical lessons\, and interactive activities for young scholars. On 13 June\, the program will include  YSI Special Sessions\, which will also be accessible online.  \nThe first four days will focus on theoretical and practical classes covering the following topics: economic complexity measurement\, network theory\, machine learning\, measurement of relatedness. Theoretical lectures will be followed by coding labs\, where participants will have the chance to apply the methodologies introduced in class\, and to carry out assigned group projects\, focusing on the school core themes. On the fifth day\, world-wide renowned scholars will be invited to present their frontier research linking economic complexity with economic development\, economic geography\, labour economics\, sustainability\, economics of science\, and innovation policy. On the same day\, the school will feature activities led by the YSI team specifically aimed at allowing students to share their research ideas with experienced scholars in the field\, network with the complexity community\, and bolster their participation in future activities of the Complexity Economics Working Group. \nThe summer school is open to postgraduate students\, early-career researchers and practitioners from any area and discipline. We are aiming at around 45 participants\, who will join in-person in Rome. Applicants will be required to submit an application using the registration form\, where they will be asked to upload a CV and a short statement (max 5000 characters) indicating how the school relates to their research interests\, if they applied to previous edition of the school\, and in which way they think they may benefit from the programme. In order to increase participation opportunities for young scholars\, we will allow free online participation during the last day of the school. YSI will offer a limited number of travel stipends for selected young scholars (i.e.PhD students) to partially cover participation expenses.  \nFor in-person participants\, the fee will be 400 EUR for students (including PhD) and 650 EUR for all other participants. The fee includes lunches and coffee breaks during the five days of the school. DESCRIPTION:The States and Markets\, Urban and Regional Economics\, Political Economy of Europe\, and Keynesian Working Groups of the Young Scholars Initiative\, in collaboration with the Italian Post-Keynesian Network (IPKN) are happy to announce a call for participation to the YSI Pre-conference@ STOREP 2025. \nThe pre-conference will take place at University of Molise (UNIMOL)\, Termoli Campus on June 11 and 12\, right before the annual Italian Association for the History of Political Economy STOREP Conference (12-14 June 2025). The theme of the conference is “Economies and territories from the history of economics perspective”. We are inviting presentations of research which connect to this theme\, or to one of the research-focuses of the YSI working groups hosting the pre-conference. \nThe pre-conference will feature three types of sessions: \n\nResearch presentations \nA research poster session\nMini-workshops and discussions with invited senior scholars\n\nAll applicants must submit an abstract in English (300 words maximum) and a very short motivation statement (100 words maximum). \nThe submission deadline for the pre-conference is (EXTENDED) April 1. Apply here. \nTravel stipends of 150 euro and shared accommodation are available for selected participants. STOREP is a regional event\, and as such the pre-conference will prioritize the participation of young scholars coming from Italy or Europe. Accommodation will be for both the pre-conference and the following STOREP conference in Termoli. We expect participants receiving accommodation to attend the STOREP conference. Information about registering for STOREP is available here. \nYoung Scholars are highly encouraged to also apply to present in the STOREP conference\, especially if their work relates to the history of economic thought\, history of economic methodology\, or the conference topic of “territories”. SUMMARY:Young Scholars versus the socio-ecological crisis: Well… Let’s talk about adaptation
DESCRIPTION:The socio-ecological crisis represents one of the most critical challenges of our time\, with far-reaching consequences on biodiversity\, human livelihoods\, and global equality. Its roots are deeply embedded in the structures of industrialization\, capitalism\, colonialism\, and societal organization. These systemic factors exacerbate inequalities at the local and global scale\, with marginalized and poor communities disproportionately bearing the burden of climate change despite contributing minimally to the crisis. Rethinking adaptation offers an opportunity to challenge mainstream approaches that often prioritize short-term\, technocratic solutions over systemic transformation. By combining scientific insights from Environmental Sciences—ranging from such as indigenous practices\, community-led initiatives and urban ecology to biodiversity conservation and the physical/ biological processes shaping our climate— we could target the root causes of socio-ecological vulnerabilities. This perspective also highlights the need for equitable decision-making processes\, ensuring that marginalized voices within geopolitics\, particularly from the Global South\, are central in shaping sustainable and inclusive responses to the crisis. This conference is dedicated to exploring these complexities and rethinking adaptation strategies that go beyond the status quo\, fostering equitable solutions for a resilient future. \nIn general\, adaptation is often framed as the solution to the socio-ecological crisis\, but important questions remain: \n\nWhat forms of adaptation are currently prioritized? Do or did they work? Are they equitable\, effective\, and sustainable?\nWho decides on adaptation policies\, and who benefits—or is left behind?\nWhat innovative\, inclusive\, and alternative strategies are being overlooked?\n\nThus\, we are delighted to invite you to the YSI Pre-Conference Workshop @ YSSEC\, followed by the first edition of “Young Scholars versus the socio-ecological crisis: Well… Let’s talk about adaptation” at Université Paris Cité\, to be held from June 12th to June 13th 2025. This event seeks to bring together early-career researchers from diverse fields to tackle the pressing challenges of the socio-ecological crisis\, with a special focus on adaptation strategies that are just\, inclusive\, and sustainable. We warmly invite young researchers (Master’s graduates\, PhD students\, postdoctoral fellows\, and early-career scholars) to submit their work for the conference and participate in the Workshop. Contributions from all disciplines and methodologies (quantitative\, qualitative\, mixed-methods) are welcome\, with a particular emphasis on innovative\, interdisciplinary approaches. Female researchers and scholars from the Global South are especially encouraged to apply. \nApplication and Submission Details: \nInterested scholars are invited to submit an abstract or a full paper of no more than 400 words by February 28\, 2024 (link). Successful applicants will be notified latest by March 14 \, 2024. A Best Paper Award will be presented to an outstanding contribution\, based on independent evaluation. Selected participants may also apply for limited financial support to assist with travel and accommodation costs.
