SUMMARY:Representing YSI voices in the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies 62 (SB62) in Bonn\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:With this Project\, we take a massive step to contribute to YSI’s long-standing mission to bridge the world of ideas with real-world systems. \nRooted in the spirit of open inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration\, YSI of INET empowers young scholars to critically and constructively engage with both theory and practice. To strengthen this mission\, building on the strategic past engagements of YSI with the UN Rio Conventions\, namely UNFCCC: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change\, YSI members will join the UNFCCC SB62 meeting in Bonn\, Germany\, in mid-June 2025. \nBuilding on our prior COP-focused activities – especially the first edition of the YSI COP for the UNFCCC COP Workshop\, which took place in Warsaw\, Poland\, from 4 to 7 November in the run-up to COP29. The workshop had the participation of fifteen scholars and practitioners in a two-day of negotiation simulation\, a farm visit\, and the preparation of a final YSI message that members of the Community brought to the grounds of COP29 in Azerbaijan. – this Project represents a strategic step in embedding the YSI Community within the policy-making landscape. Our goal is to deepen our collective understanding of climate negotiations and contribute meaningfully to the road toward COP30. This effort follows our recent webinar series\, “Why do climate negotiations fail? From different points of view”\, and will precede the 2nd Edition of our “YSI COP for the UN Rio Conventions” Workshop. \nAttending SB62 allows us to create continuity\, connecting academic curiosity with policy relevance. It opens space for future generations of young scholars to explore how research can shape and be shaped by global climate governance. In doing so\, we position YSI as a vibrant\, globally-minded network capable of informing policy beyond the walls of academia\, actively engaging with and having a positive impact on global policymaking by informing it with the latest scientific research.

SUMMARY:YSI Workshop on Structural Change\, Inequality\, and Growth
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe intersection of structural change and income inequality has become an increasingly important area of research\, particularly as developing countries undergo growth\, sectoral transformation\, and technological change. While there is some cohesion within specific research circles\, the work on the intersection of structural change and income inequality remains somewhat fragmented. This event aims to bring together researchers working on the link between the two topics to help foster a more cohesive research agenda\, contributing to a deeper understanding of how sectoral transformation influences inequality in both developing and developed countries. \nWhy Participate \nThis event offers a unique opportunity to connect with peers\, including PhD students\, post-doctoral researchers\, and established scholars\, all working on the intersection of structural change and inequality. Participants will have the chance to receive valuable feedback on their work\, engage in enriching discussions\, and explore potential collaborations. It’s an excellent platform for networking\, exchanging ideas\, and refining research through interactions with both early-career and senior scholars. Furthermore\, the event provides an opportunity to contribute to the development of a more cohesive and broader research community in this important field. \nThemes \n\nDecompositions of income inequality [keynote session]\n\nDecomposition techniques to explore drivers of inequality\, including in combination with microsimulation and nowcasting techniques.\n\n\nTechnological change and income inequality: automation\, new technologies\, and the future of work\n\nExploring the relationship between technological advancements\, in particular automation related to new technologies\, and their implications for income distribution and labour market dynamics.\n\n\nSectoral transformation and income inequality: Kuznets curve/waves\n\nExamining how shifts in economic sectors impact inequality with a focus on the relevance of Kuznets’ framework in today’s economies.\n\n\nEconomic complexity and income inequality\n\nInvestigating how diversification and technological sophistication affects the distribution of income.\n\n\nMacroeconomics\, growth\, and income inequality: sectoral composition of consumption\n\nAnalysing the role of sectoral patterns of consumption in shaping macroeconomic growth and their influence on income inequality within and across countries.\n\n\n\nActivities \n\nKeynote session on the use of microsimulation and decomposition techniques to understand drivers of inequality\nSessions with paper presentations by senior speakers and selected participants\nYSI session on research publication with journals\nCoffee breaks\, light lunch (second day)\, and social dinner (first day)\n\nEligibility \nPhDs\, postdocs\, and research scholars\, based mainly in Europe but also elsewhere. \nFees and application \nThere is no registration fee for participation in the workshop.
