SUMMARY:YSI-CESE 16th CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL STUDIES OF THE ECONOMY
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe 16th Conference on Social Studies of the Economy (XVI Jornadas de Estudios Sociales de la Economía\, JESE 2026) will take place from November 9 to 12\, 2026\, at the Interdisciplinary School of Higher Social Studies (EIDAES) of Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM)\, in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. The conference is organized by the Center for Social Studies of the Economy (CESE) and will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and online) to ensure broad regional and international participation. This edition marks the 20th anniversary of an interdisciplinary gathering that has become one of the most consolidated spaces of economic sociology in Latin America. \nTheme \nThis year’s edition\, titled “Economy and Society in Times of Authoritarian Right-Wing Politics and Digital Technologies\,” addresses two of the most significant transformations of the present: the global rise of authoritarian right-wing projects and the growing centrality of digital platforms\, algorithms\, data systems\, and AI in organizing economic and social life. The conference will examine how markets\, states\, technologies\, and social ties are being reconfigured\, and how these shifts affect work\, finance\, consumption\, public policy\, and everyday practices — with particular attention to the Latin American experience. \nThematic Axes \nDiscussions will be organized across six thematic axes: \n\nState\, development models\, and strategic sectors\nMarkets\, organizations\, firms\, and entrepreneurs\nState\, market\, and the regulation of inequalities\nFinance\, debt\, and society\nDigital economy\nEconomy and gender\n\nWho is involved \nJESE brings together sociologists\, anthropologists\, political scientists\, historians\, and economists from Argentina\, Brazil\, Chile\, Mexico\, Colombia\, France\, and the United States\, among others. Participants include advanced undergraduate and graduate students\, fellowship-holders\, early-career researchers\, and established scholars. The organizing committee is composed of CESE researchers and members of EIDAES/UNSAM. \nWhat to expect \nAttendees can expect four days of paper presentations\, panel discussions\, and informal exchange around ongoing research. Working languages are Spanish\, Portuguese\, and English. Submissions open with a 250-word abstract (deadline: July 3\, 2026)\, followed by an extended paper (4\,000–5\,000 words) for accepted contributions. The hybrid format allows researchers unable to travel to Buenos Aires to participate fully in the discussions. \nWhy take part \nJESE is a rare space where economic life is examined not as a self-contained technical domain\, but in its social\, political\, cultural\, and moral dimensions — and where Latin American perspectives are central rather than peripheral. For early-career researchers in particular\, it offers direct access to leading voices in the field\, substantive feedback on work in progress\, and lasting connections across the region. \nMore information: https://www.unsam.edu.ar/escuelas/eidaes/cese/ — Contact: cese.eidaes@unsam.edu.ar

SUMMARY:YSI Pre-conference @ 49th Federation of ASEAN Economic Associations Conference
DESCRIPTION:About the Project\nThe YSI East Asia Working Group invites graduate students\, Ph.D. candidates\, and early-career researchers to apply for our Pre-Conference Workshop in Manila. The pre-conference creates an interdisciplinary\, peer-to-peer environment to investigate the economic challenges and growth trajectories of the East and Southeast Asian region. \nIn line with YSI’s goals\, we are creating a support group for young scholars working on the topic and preparing them for advancing their research and work in pluralism and scientific communication. \nThe Pre-Conference Experience: Workshop Agenda\nWe have structured the November 12 pre-conference around three main events: \n1. Core Workshop: Pluralism in Economics & The ASEAN Reality. Mainstream\, neoclassical economic models often struggle to capture the complex institutional\, political\, and ecological realities of developing Asia. This session introduces pluralistic frameworks—ranging from Institutional and Evolutionary Economics to Post-Keynesian and ecological economics. We will explore how these diverse schools of thought can be applied practically to analyze the “ASEAN path” of development\, the changing role of the state in industrial policy\, and regional economic transformation. \n2. Professional Skills Workshop: Demystifying Academic Publishing & Journal Submissions. For early-career researchers\, navigating the peer-review process can feel like a black box. This hands-on session covers the nuts and bolts of getting your research published in regional and international economic journals. We will discuss how to select the right journal for pluralistic research\, frame your abstract to capture editors’ attention\, decode reviewer feedback\, and avoid common structural pitfalls that lead to early rejections. \n3. Informal Research Presentation Night. On the evening of November 12\, we will host a relaxed\, informal research presentation night at our shared housing. This intimate gathering is exclusively for the six (6) selected Young Scholars and the organizers. The main objective is to get to know each other\, share our research interests\, and network in a cozy\, less formal setting than the main conference. If you are presenting at the PES/FAEA conferences\, you are welcome to practice your presentation here. Alternatively\, you can present any other ongoing research you are passionate about. We particularly welcome presentations aligned with the research thrusts of the YSI East Asia Working Group. While not limited to these topics\, themes of interest include: \n\n\nEast and Southeast Asian economic philosophy \n\n\nFiscal and monetary policies \n\n\nIncome\, wealth\, and gender inequality \n\n\nRegional\, urban and rural development \n\n\nIndustrial policies \n\n\nFormal and informal labor markets in East Asia (including migration) \n\n\nFinancial markets and institutions \n\n\nInternational trade and finance \n\n\nLaw\, governance\, and corruption \n\n\nEcology and sustainable development \n\n\nHeterodox frameworks and new economic thinking that challenge mainstream paradigms (e.g.\, Modern Monetary Theory\, institutional\, post-Keynesian\, or ecological economics) \n\n\nThe Cohort Experience & Shared Housing\nCommunity building is the primary driver of this project. To maximize our working group budget and spark genuine collaboration\, the six (6) selected young scholars and the 2 organizers will live and work together under one roof. \nYSI is fully funding a single\, large\, centrally located group Airbnb in Manila for the entire cohort. By applying to this project\, you agree to participate in this shared housing arrangement for the nights of November 12-14. This communal setup ensures that academic debates\, peer feedback\, and networking continue naturally beyond workshop hours\, laying the foundation for long-term regional research partnerships. \nFinancial Support & Inclusions\nPlease be informed that our total project budget is subject to a strict YSI funding cap. Because we want to support as many young scholars as possible\, travel support is strictly limited to participants traveling from within our defined region. \n\n\nDefinition of the Region: For this workshop in Manila\, “the region” is defined as Southeast Asia (ASEAN member states) and neighboring East Asian countries that are a short\, affordable flight away. We cannot offer travel stipends to scholars flying from outside this region (e.g.\, Europe\, the Americas\, or Africa)\, though you are still welcome to apply if you can self-fund your travel. \n\n\nImportant Note on Funding: While we strive to support our community\, demonstrating financial need does not guarantee selection for the workshop or the receipt of a travel stipend. All applications are evaluated primarily on the strength\, relevance\, and pluralistic approach of the submitted research. \n\n\nThe six (6) selected young scholars will receive: \n\n\nTravel Support: A within-region travel stipend strictly capped at a maximum of USD 200 to help offset the cost of short-haul economy flights to Manila. \n\n\nAccommodation: Fully covered stay in the shared group Airbnb for 4 nights (Check-in: Nov 11\, Check-out: Nov 15). \n\n\nMeals: Full catering during the independent Pre-conference Workshop on November 12\, including a working lunch\, coffee breaks\, and a dedicated peer-to-peer networking group dinner. \n\n\nConference Registration Requirement\nThe YSI East Asia Pre-Conference Workshop is an independent event. However\, all selected Young Scholars must be officially registered as attendees (either as presenters or non-presenters) for either the 64th Philippine Economic Society (PES) Annual Meeting and Conference (Nov. 13) or the 49th FAEA Conference (Nov. 14). \nYou are not required to upload proof of conference registration when initially filling out this YSI application form. However\, if you are shortlisted for funding\, you will be asked to submit your official proof of PES/FAEA registration by October 05\, 2026\, in order to secure your spot. You will receive detailed instructions on how and where to send this in your shortlisting email. \nImportant Dates \n\n\nOctober 03\, 2026 (11:59 PM PHT (Philippine time)): (Updated) Final Application Deadline \n\n\nOctober 05\, 2026 (11:59 PM PHT (Philippine time)): Deadline for shortlisted scholars to confirm participation and submit proof of PES/FAEA registration \n\n\nOctobe 15\, 2026: Release of final selection results via email \n\n\nNovember 11\, 2026: Expected arrival in Manila and Check-in at shared housing \n\n\nNovember 12\, 2026: YSI Pre-conference Workshop & Research Presentation Night \n\n\nNovember 13-14\, 2026: PES and FAEA Main Conferences \n\n\nEligibility\n\n\nCurrent Master’s students\, Ph.D. candidates\, university instructors\, or early-career researchers (within 5 years of graduation). \n\n\nResearchers who are based in or whose work focuses heavily on East and Southeast Asian economies. \n\n\nCandidates must commit to full\, on-site participation in the Pre-conference Workshop and the shared housing experience in Manila. \n\nCandidates must be registered attendees of either the PES or FAEA conferences.\n\nSubmission Requirements & Application Checklist\nPlease submit your application through the YSI portal by October 03\, 2026 (final deadline). Ensure you have the following ready to complete the form: \n\n\nYSI Involvement & Motivation: Be prepared to state your current YSI Working Group affiliations and write a short text (max 200 words) on your motivation for joining the cohort. \n\n\nPluralism Statement: A short text (max 200 words) explaining how your research challenges conventional economic models or utilizes a pluralistic framework. \n\n\nCV/Resume: Your current Academic CV (PDF format only).
