SUMMARY:The Development of Economic Thought in Malawi (1964 – 2025)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop seeks to advance research on the development of economic thought in Malawi\, with a special focus on how economic thought as a distinct intellectual field has interacted with political-economic policies since the ushering in of independence to the present period. The workshop will be anchored on the following objectives: 1) Explore the evolution of economic thought in Malawi as a distinct intellectual field from Independence to the present period; 2) Assess the dominant methodologies that have been used in the development of economic thought as an intellectual enterprise in Malawi; 3) Explore the dissemination of economic thought in Malawi from Independence to the present period; 4) Critically evaluate the reception of economic thought in Malawian politics; and 5) Establish the relationship between economic thought and political-economic policies from Independence to the present period. The organisers will select 1o young scholars\, including Masters students\, PhD candidates\, and postdoctoral fellows whose research addresses the development of economic thought in Malawi\, the dissemination of economic thought as an intellectual enterprise in Malawi from Independence to the present period\, the reception of economic thought as an intellectual enterprise in Malawian politics\, and the relationship between economic thought and political-economic policies from Independence to the present period. The two-day workshop will start with established scholars presenting their completed or ongoing research on the development of economic thought in Malawi\, the dominant methodologies that have been used\, and how economic thought as an intellectual enterprise has been disseminated and received\, and how it has influence political-economic policies in Malawi. Young scholars will have a chance to engage with the senior scholars’ presentations and even interrogate the methodologies that have hitherto characterised the development of economic thought as an intellectual enterprise in Malawi. On the second day\, young scholars will present their completed or ongoing research on this topic\, highlighting the challenges with previous methodologies and methods of disseminations\, the gaps between economic thought and political-economic policies\, and how current and future research methodologies and dissemination practices can help bridge the gap between theory and praxis. The young scholars will have the chance of receiving critical feedback from the senior scholars and their peers. \nFor more information or inquiries\, get in touch with Dr Tanaka Chidora @ tchidora@unima.ac.mw or Dr Peter Uledi @ peteruledy@gmail.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:Development in Latin America: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Development in Latin America. Current Challenges and Future Perspectives  \nDate: 26th and 27th November 2026  \nLocation: Instituto de Estudios Internacionales\, Universidad de Chile\, Santiago\, Chile  \nDevelopment economics is not what it used to be. It has been a long time since Hirschman’s The Rise and Decline of Development Economics. The discipline now seems to focus increasingly on highly specific topics and places\, while broader perspectives have gradually receded. This narrowing of the debate is particularly evident in Latin America\, where development is too often reduced to economic growth\, and growth to macroeconomic stability. But is that enough? Do all countries have to follow the same path? Many of the questions that traditionally shaped Latin American development thinking are now largely absent from mainstream debates.  \nThe sessions are designed to foster dialogue between young researchers and policymakers\, recognizing that addressing the region’s development challenges requires a continuous exchange between academic research and the practical realities of policy design and implementation.  \nWe particularly welcome submissions that address:  \n\n(de)industrialisation  \n\n\nthe functioning of multinational companies \n\n\ntechno-productive heterogeneities \n\n\ncompetition in the international market\, exports \n\n\ndevelopment policies  \n\nEligibility  \nYoung researchers and early-career policymakers are encouraged to apply. We welcome submissions that engage with the broad themes of the event and explore development challenges and policy issues in Latin America.  \nIt is expected that selected candidates will attend the entire event.  \n  \nSubmission Guidelines  \nSubmissions may be based on work in progress. We welcome contributions at different stages of research\, from early-stage proposals to manuscripts presenting advanced findings.  \nExtended abstracts should not exceed 1\,500 words and must clearly outline the research question\, literature review/theoretical framework\, methodology\, main findings (where applicable)\, and references.   \nSubmissions must be written in English\, Spanish\, or Portuguese.  \n19th October: deadline for extended abstract submission.  \n26th October: notification of acceptance.   \n  \nFunding  \nLimited financial support -for accommodation or travel expenses- may be available for selected participants. More details on funding opportunities will be provided upon acceptance.  \n  \nPreliminar Program   \nDay 1   \n14h – 14\,30hs: Registration and YSI opening  \nSession 1 14.30 – 16;  Working papers presentations  (WPP) \nBreak  \nSession 2 16.30 – 17.30; Lecture  \nDay 2  \nSession 3 9.30 – 11;  WPP  \nBreak  \nSession 4 11.30 – 13; Roundtable   \nBreak \nSession 5. 14.30 – 16;  WPP \n  \n
