These dynamics raise urgent questions about emerging growth pathways\, the distribution of risk across households\, firms\, and territories\, and the institutional and fiscal capacities required for social protection\, climate resilience\, and inclusive development. In this context\, the Southeast Asia Economic Research and Development Conference (SAERD) is designed to be both supportive and rigorous for young scholars from the region and around the world. We welcome early-stage work and fully developed papers\, and we prioritise meaningful feedback through discussant-led sessions and moderated discussion. SAERD aims to strengthen Cambodia as one of the centres of regional research convening\, where young and senior scholars can meet on equal intellectual ground\, learn from disagreement\, and build collegial and solidarity-based research networks. \n  \nThemes \nSubmissions may address (but are not limited to) the following themes: \n\nEconomic growth\, inequality\, and inclusion\nSocial protection\, welfare systems\, and human development\nPublic finance\, budgeting\, expenditure quality\, and fiscal sustainability\nGovernance\, institutions\, accountability\, and state capacity\nMonitoring & evaluation (M&E)\, performance management\, and public sector reform\nSustainability\, ecology\, natural resource governance\, and climate resilience\nClimate finance\, green budgeting\, and just transitions\nDigital transformation\, innovation\, automation\, and public services\nFood security\, agrarian transformation\, and rural livelihoods\nUrban and regional economics; infrastructure and spatial change\nLabour economics\, gender\, care\, and welfare regimes\nRegional integration\, trade\, and global uncertainty\nHistory of economic thought\, economic history\, and path dependency\nInterdisciplinary and pluralist approaches in economic analysis\n\n  \n Conference format\nThe conference will feature plenary sessions with invited senior scholars and parallel paper sessions for young scholars. SUMMARY:Escola Itinerante “Juventude\, Estratégias de Adaptação e Justiça Socioecológica” – YSI@XVIIECOECO
\nEquipe: Teresa Meira\, Roldan Muradian\, Natallya Levino\, Deivdson Gatto\, Alonso Calheiros\, Verônica Antunes\, Wesley Douglas\, Mariana Reis\, Cauã Sousa \nEnglish version \nThis Itinerant School is proposed as a pre-event to the XVII National Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Ecological Economics (ECOECO 2026). While the main conference will take place at the Instituto Federal de Alagoas\, this Itinerant School will be held in several critical territories in the city of Maceió\, Alagoas\, Brazil\, from December 3 to 5\, 2026. It also marks the 3rd edition of the Itinerant School\, reinforcing YSI’s commitment to youth-led economic thinking. \nTheme: Youth\, Adaptation Strategies and Socio-ecological Justice \nThe central theme of this School is adaptation strategies – focusing on responses that are built and led by young people from affected communities\, grassroots movements\, and universities\, always through the lens of socio-ecological justice. \nContext  \nMaceió is currently experiencing one of Brazil’s most severe socio-environmental disasters linked to a mega-project of salt mining. Since 2018\, rapid ground subsidence has forced the relocation of thousands of families\, destroyed entire neighborhoods\, and created deep uncertainty about the future of the territory. Yet most academic and policy discussions on “adaptation” remain top-down. This project is motivated by the urgent need to learn about adaptation from the ground up. \nThe previous two editions of the Itinerant School have shown that moving the classroom to the territory transforms research. We learn better when we walk on sinking ground\, listen to community researchers\, and co-produce tools that are useful beyond the event. \nMethodology and Mentorship \nAn additional component of the methodology is mentorship. Throughout the Itinerant School\, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own research or community projects with mentors who have been carefully selected to contribute to this school. These mentors include experienced scholars in political ecology and ecological economics\, as well as practitioners working on just transition and socio-environmental justice. The goal is to provide each participant with constructive feedback\, strategic guidance\, and possible pathways for turning their ideas into ongoing action or further academic work. This mentorship dimension ensures that the school is not only a space for learning but also a space for nurturing and strengthening the next generation of young scholars. \nKey topics to be addressed \n\n\nSocio-ecological justice and unequal vulnerability to extractivism \n\n\nJust transition in territories affected by large scale-projects (mining\, fossil fuels\, agribusiness\, hydropower\, etc.) \n\n\nValue chains and land use conflicts \n\n\nYouth agency in territorial defense and alternative economic arrangements \n\n\nApplications \nApplications must be submitted by October 15\, 2026. \nResults by October 21\, 2026
