YSI Pre-Conference @ 3rd Global Carework Summit

It is not possible to think about the economy without analyzing and recognizing the essential role that care work plays in the reproduction of the economic system. The labor force, taken as a "given" resource endowment by traditional views of the economy, needs in fact to be renewed and reproduced. All those actions that make it possible to transform goods and services into effective well-being, enabling people to participate in the economic system, are known as care work.

The way in which this care work is socially organized is unfairly distributed, since the burden falls disproportionately on women, and stratified, since its provision depends on people's socioeconomic position. It is therefore urgent to rethink care work in order to rebuild fairer and more egalitarian economies.

The3rd Global Carework Summit 2023 to be held June 7-9 in Costa Rica invites us to collectively rethink care work in order to imagine more sustainable futures in the face of the uncertainties left by the COVID-19 pandemic in the world. It proposes to reflect on questions such as: How does uncertainty shape the understanding and social organization of care work? How does putting care work at the center help us imagine sustainable futures where care is a collective responsibility? What are the convergences in how care work is understood and organized globally? What are the divergences, given varied capacities, cultures, histories, and experiences in different countries and regions?
