Description

YSI-Session Workshop on New Developmentalism: Macroeconomic Development for the Global South

The New Developmentalism (ND) is a theoretical framework that has been developed by prominent economists in Brazil since the early 2000s. It has been developed to comprehend the growth and development dynamics of middle-income countries, in particular, Latin America. The theory, based largely on classical development economics and post-Keynesian economics, has brought important contributions to the field of political economy and development macroeconomics. It focuses on the fiscal and current accounts and on five macroeconomic prices which the market is unable to keep ‘right’.

The 7th Workshop on New Developmentalism will be an event composed of lectures, conferences by a keynote speaker, discussion panels with senior scholars and panels of paper presentations on themes related to economic development in emerging countries – in particular, through the theoretical approach of New Developmentalism. In this way, it seeks to stimulate debate and understanding of possible unconventional strategies for catching up in developing countries. More specifically, it seeks to stimulate debate, production, and the strengthening of a network of researchers on macroeconomic and development theory from an unconventional approach.

Main speakers confirmed:

  1. Aloizio Mercadante, President of BNDES
  2. Martin Guzman, Former Minister of Economy of the Republic of Argentina
  3. Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira, Former Minister of Economy of Brazil and Emeritus Professor at FGV.
