In August 2023, Azim Premji University hosted the first International Conference on the History of Economic Thought (HET) in India. The conference aimed to “contribute to the development of the field and advance our understanding of the historical roots of contemporary economic debates and challenges.” The presentations covered a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from African to Indian economic thought, from Ambedkar to Sraffa, from Keynesian to Feminist economics, and from Kautilya to Khaldun. The conference attracted a diverse group of HET and non-HET instructors and students from various parts of the country.

This is the first annual conference on HET since the formation of the Indian Society of the History of Economic Thought (ISHET) and will be organised in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad. In an effort to further improve access to and diffusion of HET knowledge in Indian academia, the YSI History of Economic Thought Working Group is also organising a one-day pre-conference workshop preceding the conference.

This year at ISHET 2024, YSI Gender and Economics Group will host two panels and one keynote lecture by Rebeca Gomez Betancourt (University of Lyon) under the common theme of feminist economic thought. Each panel will be 90 minutes long and have 3 presenters each. The duration of each presentation will be approx. 20 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion and Q&A. The presenters can also expect to get feedback from Rebeca on their proposed work. Rebeca is a Professor of Economics at the University of Lyon and was the first president of The Latin American Society for the History of Economic Thought (ALAHPE). She has also been associated with the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) and the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET). Her current research is in the area of feminist economic thought.
An illustrative list of themes for the panels is provided below:
- The evolution of social reproduction theory
- The History of Time Use Surveys and their contribution to measuring women’s work and welfare
- The history of women’s movements in the Global South in relation to labour, leisure, family
- The contribution of individual women and women economists (like Devaki Jain, Vina Mazumdar, Krishna Bharadwaj, and others) to economic thought and the evolution of policy discourse in India
The objective of the proposed panels is to provide a platform to young scholars researching feminist economic thought or using a feminist lens to conduct their research, to receive feedback on their research and to contribute to the discourse of feminist economic thought in India. It also aims to provide them with a platform to interact and build a community with other young and senior scholars researching the domain of feminist economic thought and the history of economic thought.
We encourage submissions, especially from young scholars, pursuing or interested in research in feminist economic thought, to apply by submitting an abstract (500 words max). The deadline for submitting abstracts is 30 June 2024. All presenters will be eligible for accommodation near the conference venue and partial travel stipends. Partial funding is also available for limited participants. Preference will be given to young female scholars, those from marginalised communities and/ or with limited institutional support.
The decisions for abstract selection and stipend allocation will be made by the Scientific and Organising Committee for the ISHET conference. Note that the stipends do not cover the registration fees that each participant should afford on their own. Please refer to the ISHET website for details about the registration fees.
